Situated between the Caribbean and the heart of South America, Columbia’s transient geography plays a big role in the country’s identity. As in other countries in Northern South America, the country is made up of a large (11%) indigenous population. Religion in Colombia is largely Catholic, and it plays a big role in daily life. The buildup to Christmas consists of many religious rites. Columbians love to dance the salsa or the cumbia. Famous modern musicians like. Shakira and J Balvin are from Colombia and illustrate the global influence of Colombian music. Soccer is the pride of Colombia, with family and friends gathering to watch the games of the national team. Cycling trails in popularity, having rooted itself in Colombian culture both professionally and for leisure. Musically, Colombia’s landscape is as diverse as the country’s topography. The cumbia is a renowned blending of African, indigenous, and European practices. Colombia also has a vibrant set of festivals to complement their unique style of music. Colombian life is very family-centered and Colombians are very sociable and timely. The Museo del Oro in Bogotá contains a large collection of ancient gold artifacts. Colombia’s modern history is also marred by the violence of the ‘80s and ‘90s brought by drug trafficking. Colombia is extremely dense, with more than 3/4 of the population living in urban areas. 97% of the Columbian population lives in the upper highlands and coast of Columbia, leaving the jungles largely uninhabited apart from small guerilla groups which can occupy these areas. As a result of colonization and the Spanish Casta system, there exist glaring class distinctions, with a minority of traditionally wealthy families and narcos on the top of the pyramid. The endorsement of these classes, often aligned with family lineage, lead to intense racism in Colombia. In spite of the country’s challenges, Colombians are very proud of their nation, and they want to focus on the beautiful aspects of their culture. Colombian food is a blend of so many cultures and climates. Some popular dishes are empanadas, tamales and arroz con pollo. A big part of Colombian life and business is coffee. It has a rich flavor and is consumed daily by many Colombians and even non-Colombians around the world. Colombian writers like Gabriel Garcia Marquez have received international recognition for their amazing contributions to literature. Colombians have a deep-seated respect for elders, religion, accompaniment, and good food. Colombian dress varies by community, but traditionally women wear elegant white dresses with floral accents and men wear white outfits with a sombrero and a subtle accent somewhere. Colombia interestingly controls 75-90% of the world's emerald market too.
