Honduras
Honduras was the original banana republic, owing to its past reliance on the export of fruits to the US.
Situated centrally in the Americas, Honduras has a rich makeup of cultural traditions coming as a byproduct of its cultural syncretism. Its landscape is very mountainous; three-fourths of the land is covered by mountains. Across this terrain, all kinds of colorful wildlife are found, like macaws. The people found in Honduras are mostly Mestizo with a sprinkle of indigenous (found in the southwest) and Black persons (located along the Caribbean speaking English). Honduras is mostly Catholic, but there exists a growing Protestant population. Also, there exists a massive wage gap, which sees the poor eating only corn and living in small makeshift houses with dirt floors. Settlement remains fairly rural, but there is a large agglomeration of people around Tegucigalpa. This has caused, historically, issues of pollution, water quality, and more. While Guatemala is among the poorest countries in Latin America, its vast population (two-fifths of Guatemalans) of fruit farmers has a well-regulated industry thanks to past labor exploitations that were condemned in a code. In addition to tropical fruits, the economy revolves around coffee as well as textiles. Education in Guatemala is obligatory at an early age, and later children are sent to universities in Tegucigalpa. Despite recent advances, one-fourth of the adult population is illiterate. The majority of workers are not covered by social welfare and those that are receive inadequate care. Among rural and low-income groups, healthcare is adversely bad, and these communities often suffer from primordial diseases. As in many Central American societies, everyday life is dominated by the family. Elders are treated with utmost respect, and the family takes precedence in all affairs. It is expected, in return, that the family will provide their own with job searches and other important opportunities. The position of godparents is very important, and they are adopted into other families. The gastronomy of Honduras consists of seafood in the south, queso con chile in the west, and a bread called cazabe. The most important holiday in Honduras is when the patron saint, the Virgin of Suyapa, is honored in February. Sports in Honduras pale in comparison to soccer. The national team unites the nation and has seen some success in the past. Most towns can entertain a soccer team at some level too. In addition, art in Honduras is centered around Mayan contributions, as contemporary developments are scarce due to a lack of educated creatives.
